Debi McKay launched McKay Insurance in 2009 with a simple but powerful goal: to build a career that allowed her to work from home and be present for her children. At a time when remote work was far from common, she saw the opportunity and stepped into it. What began as a leap of faith has grown into a thriving agency that now supports not only her clients, but her own family — who work alongside her and have expanded the sales and scope of the business.

During her first year, NWMEF played a steady and practical role in her success. Through consistent meetings, Debi received help setting up her first budget, thinking through tough questions, and staying accountable. The structure and encouragement during those early years helped her build strong foundations. Nearly 20 years later — with plans to retire in 2029 on her 20th anniversary — she describes the journey as both the hardest and most rewarding adventure of her life. She remains deeply grateful for the loyal customers who have supported her along the way.

Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is clear: be prepared to be a jack of all trades for the first three years. Ask for help where your weaknesses lie. Show up as your authentic self and serve each customer well. Never take a client for granted — if you treat people right and take care of them, they will remember and they will tell others.
